Re: [Sessionize Support] Monitoring PgVector RAG Agents Applications - HOW2025 - My Events - Speaker profile

by GRANT ZHOU

Hello Jayita, Apologies for the delayed response. We've discussed your participation and truly appreciate your interest in joining us. Unfortunately, due to the short notice, we haven't been able to finalize our budget allocation. We can cover hotel accommodations in Jinan and high-speed train travel from Beijing, but other expenses are beyond our current budget given the strong international speaker participation. I would recommend participating remotely this time, which will be much easier for us to schedule the talk sessions. I hope you have the remote participation guidelines, but here's a quick summary: Please record a high-definition video of your presentation and send it (google drive download link) to us in advance . We'll play your recorded presentation during your scheduled time slot at the conference. If you'd like, you can also join us remotely via Zoom or VooV at the end of your session for a live Q&A with attendees. I hope you understand, and we look forward to opportunities to collaborate in the future. Re: About the Postgres Conferecne in China

by Álvaro Hernández

Oh, I'm sorry about that! I thought it was June 10th, it's listed as such on the website: I'll do this tomorrow in my morning, so you can have it ASAP. Another thing, may I ask you for some recommendations for my trip? Here's where I'd value your opinion: - I'll land in PKX (Beijing Daxing International Airport right?) on the 25th at 3pm. I will need some rest after a long trip, so I'm thinking staying in Beijing (it's also my first time in China, so I'm good with this). From there I'll go to Beijing and stay there for one night. Any particular area would you recommend? Should I stay close to the train station to take the train next day to Jinan, or is not needed? - As for Jinan, I'll book the same hotel as the venue, but let me know if I should book something else. - Is there any plan at the conference on the 28th? I'm considering returning to Beijing either on this night or the 29th in the morning. My flight back is late in the evening on the 29th, so I'm unsure what would be the best plan. Also I'd like to have the chance to visit around Beijing, but realistically I don't have much time anyway for this. Any ideas are welcome :) Thank you for all your help. New submission: PostgreSQL Optimizer Flaws: Real Stories and How We Fix Them

by HOW2025

Alena Rybakina has submitted a new session! PostgreSQL Optimizer Flaws: Real Stories and How We Fix Them The PostgreSQL optimizer usually does a solid job producing efficient query plans. But sometimes, it underestimates cardinality or misjudges query structure, leading to seriously inefficient plans and blown-out execution times. In this talk, we'll dive into some of the most unusual and surprising real-world cases where the optimizer got it wrong. We'll analyze the root causes behind these failures and walk you through how we tackled them — from the initial idea to real feature implementations like "OR-to-ANY Transformation" [0], "VALUES-to-ANY Transformation"[1], Replanning [2], and smart extensions like AQO [3], Switch Join [4], and more. You'll leave with a better understanding of how the optimizer works and where its weak spots are - plus fresh ideas on how to outsmart it. New submission: Vacuum Performance Analysis Tools

by HOW2025

Alena Rybakina has submitted a new session! Vacuum Performance Analysis Tools Vacuum is one of the most critical processes in a database system. It prevents issues like table and index bloating and emergency freezes caused by transaction ID wraparound. It also keeps the visibility map up to date. However, improperly tuned autovacuum settings can lead to excessive resource consumption, causing queries across the system to slow down. Database administrators must carefully adjust autovacuum parameters to balance the benefits of vacuuming with its overhead. Today, administrators typically rely on basic statistics, like the number of vacuum passes over tables or real-time data from pg_stat_progress_vacuum. But these metrics are limited — they’re only available during vacuum operations and don’t offer a strategic, long-term view. I’d like to explain our mechanism for collecting detailed information about vacuum resource consumption for both tables and indexes [0]. This data is stored in the Cumulative Statistics System on a per-relation basis — meaning for each table and each index. It can be analyzed using monitoring tools like pg_profile [1]. pg_profile is a PostgreSQL extension that captures query statistics and snapshots them over time, helping to identify and troubleshoot server performance bottlenecks. I’ll demonstrate how these new vacuum counters can give you a clearer, object-level view of vacuum activity in your database and help guide more effective autovacuum configuration.
